Every 3 seconds.
THAT'S THE RATE OF DOMESTIC ABUSE IN THE U.S.
IN OTHER WORDS, IN THE TIME IT'S TAKEN YOU
JUST TO READ UP TO THIS POINT, ANOTHER
4-5 PEOPLE HAVE JUST BECOME VICTIMS.
MORE THAN 10 MILLION EACH YEAR.*
~20 PER MINUTE.
These numbers can be shocking.
Maybe hard to grasp.
But what they absolutely cannot be is dismissed,
because every number has a name.
Something must be done to provide victims of domestic violence
the resources that offer protection, safety, and, ultimately,
the peace of mind to no longer live in fear.
Now, something is being done.
On June 25, 2020, the North Carolina State Legislature passed a critical bill that allocates federal funding to the Department of Public Safety, Division of Administrator. These funds will be used to provide a grant to Caitlyn's Courage to address domestic violence head-on with technology.
House Bill 1023 earmarks $3.5 million in federal COVID-19 stimulus funds toward the development and implementation of a GPS monitoring program aimed at reducing interaction between domestic violence victims and the accused. The program alerts both parties when they are in close proximity, either by mistake or intentionally. A third-party 24-hour monitoring entity is also alerted and can intervene...
Caitlyn's Courage was founded in memory of Caitlyn Whitehurst who was a victim of a domestic violence murder-suicide. Caitlyn was a loving daughter, sister, granddaughter, aunt, and a friend to many. The Whitehurst family founded the non-profit organization with a goal of fostering and delivering proven vital services to curtail domestic violence throughout North Carolina.
Caitlyn was the absolute sweetest and happiest young woman that you could ever have had the pleasure of meeting. She had a heart of gold that overflowed with love and respect of anyone and everyone. She knew no strangers and her love knew no boundaries. She loved without discrimination or judgment. She would do anything that was within her power to help anyone who needed help. She would literally give you the shirt off of her benevolent back. She was selfless and always putting the needs of others above her own wants and needs. Always smiling with a smile that was genuine and pure. Her smile could light up even the darkest of days. A positive attitude and words of encouragement were her testimony. As a God loving faith filled Christian the love of Christ always radiated from within this precious young woman. Her laugh was contagious and could elicit great joy for all of those who were lucky enough to hear it. God had bestowed upon her the gift of servitude. She treated her patients and everyone else with respect love and sincere empathy. She loved children and animals beyond measure. A true blessing to everyone that knew her. Caitlyn had an unextinguishable light and a joy that lived within her at all times. She was a peacemaker. Her mission was to love and care for anyone that she met. She loved without boundaries. She lived life fully each day and she forgave always. A true Angel here on earth. She will be greatly missed.
